Patients are asking AI to pick their dentist. Independent practices can’t afford to be left out of the answer.
A family moves to a new part of town. One of them chips a tooth on a Saturday. Instead of scrolling through search results, they open ChatGPT or Gemini and type, “Emergency dentist open now near me that takes Delta Dental.” A few seconds later they have an answer with two or three names in it. They call one of them.
If your practice wasn’t one of those names, you never knew the patient existed. No missed call. No lost lead in your system. They just went somewhere else.
This is the quiet change happening in how new patients find a dentist, and independent practices are the most exposed to it.
The shift has already happened
This isn’t a prediction about the future. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers, 45% said they now use AI tools to get recommendations for local businesses, up from 6% a year earlier. Among people aged 30 to 44, the age of most parents choosing a family dentist, it was 64%.
Yext’s 2026 study of nearly 3,900 consumers found that 28% had tried a new local business in the past six months because an AI tool recommended it. Most people still check reviews and websites before they book. But the AI answer decides which practices they bother to check.
Google still matters. Patients still read reviews. What has changed is the first step. More and more often, the first step is a question typed to an assistant, and the assistant gives a short list, not a page of links.
A search results page has room for dozens of practices. An AI answer usually has room for three.
Why independent practices get passed over
AI assistants don’t pick the best dentist. They pick the practice whose information they can find, read, and trust. That means clear service pages, current hours, an insurance list in plain text, and the same facts on your website, your Google profile, and the directories patients use.
Large groups and DSOs have marketing staff whose job is to keep that information tidy across dozens of listings. Most independent offices have an office manager who is also answering phones, verifying insurance, and running the schedule. Small gaps build up over time, and AI notices them.
Here are the errors we see most often:
- Wrong hours. Your website says open Saturday morning. Your Google profile says closed. AI skips you for “open now.”
- Insurance it can’t read. Your accepted plans are posted as an image or a PDF. The models can’t read it, so they say they don’t know, or they name a practice that lists its plans as text.
- A dentist who left. An old directory still lists a dentist who left two years ago. AI repeats it to your next patient.
- Services nobody wrote down. You offer sedation, same-day emergencies, and Invisalign. If your site doesn’t say so plainly, AI won’t connect you to those questions.
None of these say anything about the quality of your dentistry. They are paperwork problems. But they decide who gets named.
Your marketing company probably isn’t checking this
Most dental marketing agencies are built to rank Google pages and run ads. Those still matter. But very few of them read what ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude actually tell a patient about your practice each week. Ask yours what ChatGPT said about you last Tuesday. If they can’t answer, nobody is watching that part.
What being left out costs
A new patient isn’t one visit. It’s cleanings twice a year, a crown someday, maybe Invisalign for a teenager, and often the rest of the family too. Losing one new patient a month to a competitor that AI happens to prefer adds up quickly over a year.
The hard part is that you can’t see it happening. Your phones ring less often. Your new-patient count slips. Nothing points to the reason.
What independent practices can do now
- Find out what AI says today. Ask the questions your patients ask, in every major assistant, using your city and neighborhood. Write down whether you’re named and who is named instead.
- Fix the facts that disagree. Make your hours, phone number, dentists, and insurance plans match on your website, Google profile, and insurer directories.
- Say what you do in plain words. Give emergencies, sedation, Invisalign, and new patients each a clear sentence on your site. Not an image. Not buried in a blog post from 2023.
- Check again every week. AI answers change often. A fix can win a mention one week, and a competitor’s update can take it back the next.
Most of this is work your office manager can do in less than an hour a week, once someone shows them exactly where the problems are.
Where Chairline fits
Chairline does that checking for you. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude the questions real patients type, every week. Then we show you whether your practice is named, who is recommended instead and why, and which facts AI has wrong. Each week ends with a short list of fixes your office can do in under an hour.
Chairline isn’t a marketing agency. We don’t run ads, post reviews, or contact your patients. We tell you what AI says about your practice and what to fix.
The first step is free. Enter your practice name, city, and email, and get a Snapshot of where you stand today. If what you see is uncomfortable, Pro keeps watching every week for $199 a month, one location, cancel anytime.
